Namma metro: Bangalore, India’s Garden City, is a technology center and could soon be the Startup capital of India. Traffic is also a problem in this city, which is full of startups. Bangalore Metro was created to address this problem in the 2000s. The metro system in Bangalore is also known as Namma Metro (meaning “Our Metro” in Kannada). Two metro lines, the Green and Purple, are currently operational. The Metro line connects nearly the entire city. Metro connectivity is being built for those parts that aren’t connected. Or a proposed metro line. Every month, Bangalore Metro carries between 2.5 lakh and 3.5 lakh passengers.   • Bangalore Metro Launches a WhatsApp-Based Ticketing System. WhatsApp and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited have created a WhatsApp chatbot-based QR ticketing system. Namma Metro commuters can now purchase metro tickets via end-to-end QR ticketing using WhatsApp. WhatsApp allows you to recharge your metro travel pass, buy single-trip tickets, and access the most recent fare tables.
  • BMRCL to Inaugurate the Phase 2A Metro Line in 2025: BMRCL-Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited – could inaugurate Phase 2A (Outer Ring Road), Airport Metro Line in June 2025. Phase 2B will likely be completed by September 2025. There will be 30 stations on the metro with multimodal facilities such as bus bays or taxi stands, bike pools, and pedestrian walkways. The 56km ORR-Airport Metro stretch will connect Central Silk Board Junction with Kempegowda International Airport. KR Puram, Hebbal will be passed on the route. Construction of ORR Airport Metro will cost approximately Rs 14.844. The metro will be able to connect 16 lakh passengers daily.
  • BMRCL- Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited – could inaugurate Phase 1 of the metro line between Baiyyappanahalli and Whitefield (15 km) in March 2023. Trials will start on 25 October 2022. The trail runs will include inspection of rolling stock, signaling, telecommunication, and other infrastructure. Officials have also transported six metro coaches from Baiyyappanahalli to Whitefield.

Bangalore Metro Lines

Currently, two metro lines are operational in Bangalore, with 51 stations in total. These two lines are called the Purple line and the Green line.

In October 2011, the purple line was inaugurated, connecting Baiyyappanahalliin east with Mysore Road Terminal Station in the southwest. It has 17 stations and stretches over 18.1 km. The line’s 4.8km stretch runs underground in Majestic, MG Road, and Majestic. This line was last extended from Mysore Road toward Kengeri in August 2021. In 2022, the authority will extend the line two kilometers to Challaghatta.

Bangalore Metro Green Line

The Bangalore Namma Metro Green Line was inaugurated in March 2014. It runs from Nagasandra in the northwest to Anjanapura (in the southwest). There are 30 stations, and the distance between them is 30 km. Only four kilometers are covered by the elevated green line, with three underground stations. It was extended for the last time in January 2021. Now, it is being extended to Madavara in the South and Silk Institute in the South for 33.5km.

Bangalore Metro Phases

Bangalore metro route is divided into various phases:-

Bangalore Metro Phase 1

There are 40 stations along two 42-kilometer-long lines in the Namma metro’s first phase. Of these 40 stations, 8 km are underground, and 36 km are elevated. In 2007, the first phase was initiated between Baiyyappanahalli (MG Road) and Mahatma Gandhi Road. Later, the phrase was extended from Yeshwanthpur and Nagasandra to Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road towards Yelachenahalli.

Bangalore Metro Phase 2

Namma metro Phase 2 is a 72-kilometer stretch with 62 stations. 13 km of the 72 km are underground, and the rest are elevated. The Union cabinet approved this phase in 2014. The Union cabinet approved this phase in 2014. The Purple Line will be extended from Baiyappanahalli through Whitefield, Mysore Road, and Challaghatta via Kengeri. The extension will cost approximately Rs 32,000 crores.
Another elevated line, 18 km between RV Road (previously Gottigere) and Bommasandra via Electronic City, is also in the works. A 21-kilometer stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara (previously Gottigere) is also in process. The second phase should be completed by 2024.
Once the Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield Bangalore metro line opens up, there will be an increase in ridership. Namma metro estimates a ridership of 2.5 lakh to 35,000 passengers. The metro line will benefit IT workers whose offices are located in Whitefield. The official at Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd stated that the trial of this line would begin in September, and it will be operational by the end of the year.

Bangalore Metro Phase 2A (Blue Line)

Phase 2A is a new line between Silk Board (previously Mahadevapura) and KR Puram. It is the Blue line. The phase proposes 13 stations – have 13 stations – Silk Board and HSR Layout. This line will be connected to the Purple line at KR Puram from the Yellow line at Silk Board via an interchange station.

Bangalore Metro Phase 2B (Airport Line)

Phase 2B, also known as the Metro line or the MG road, will link MG road and Kempegowda Airport. The current construction of this phase is underway and costs Rs 10,584 crores. It runs 39 km between Krishnarajapura (KR Puram) and Kempegowda airport. The metro will travel along the northern portion of ORR (Outer Ring Road).

Bangalore Metro Phase 3

The proposed Bangalore metro phase 3 is approximately 44.50km long, with two corridors. The fully elevated Phase 3 Bangalore metro system will be used. Construction of both corridors is expected by the end of 2027. One of the corridors that will be built from Hebbal towards Sarjapura was revealed in March 2022 during the state budget speech. According to the detailed report on Bangalore metro phase 3, the project’s estimated cost will be approximately Rs.15,000 crore.

History Key Dates of Bangalore Metro

The following are key to the Bangalore metro:-

Phase1

  • 20 Oct 2011: Purple line from Baiyyappanahalli to MG Road – 6.7 km
  • 01 Mar 2014: Green line from Sampige Road to Peenya Industry – 9.9 km
  • 01 May 2015: Green line extended from Peenya Industry to Nagasandra – 2.5 km
  • 16 Nov 2015: Another stretch on the Purple line from Mysore Road to Magadi Road – 6.4 km
  • 30 Apr 2016: MG Road on the Purple line was further extended to Magadi Road – 4.8 km
  • 19 June 2017: Green line extends from Sampige Road to Yelachenahalli – 12 km

Phase2

  • 15 Jan 2021: Another phase on the Green line from Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute was inaugurated – 5.8 km
  • 30 Aug 2021: Mysore Road was further extended to Kengeri on Purple Line – 7.5 km

Bangalore Metro Fares 

Bangalore metro fares are calculated according to the distance traveled and token type. The fare typically ranges from Rs 10 to Rs 45. The fare system in Bangalore is broken down into three categories.

  • Token (Ticket), You can purchase a token for as low as Rs. 10 and Rs. 50. This ticket is the best for single-way travel within the Bangalore metro.
  • Group Tickets A group of at least 25 people can buy group tickets. A group must travel to the same destination. The token fare can be discounted by 10%
  • Smartcard: Smart cards can be recharged for each use. These cards can be purchased for as low as Rs 50 and loaded up to Rs 3000. Metro riders get 5% off the token amount.

Bangalore Metro Timings

The services of Bangalore Metro start at 5:00 AM, while the last metro leaves at 10:35 PM. The services run from 6:00 AM to 10:35 PM on public holidays such as the second and fourth Saturdays. On Sundays, however, the first metro will be available at 7:00 AM and lasts until 11:00 PM.

Bangalore Metro: Interesting Facts

These are some interesting facts about the Bangalore metro and Namma metro.

  • Namma Metro is the name of Bangalore’s metro. Namma means ‘Our’ in Kannadiga
  • It is the first metro in any southern state
  • Bangalore metro is the first project to use 750V DC Third Rail Traction for Standard Gauge.
  • Bangalore metro is a joint venture of the government of India with Karnataka.
  • It is divided into two corridors: the east-west (Purple Line) and the northernmost (Green Line).
  • The metro runs at a speed max 80 Kmph and an average speed of 34Kmph.

Bangalore Metro: QR Code Tickets

From the first week in October 2022, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited will introduce QR code-based tickets. A QR code ticketing system allows passengers to avoid standing in long lines for tokens and smart cards. Namma Metro Mobile Application allows you to purchase tickets based on a QR code. The QR code can be found on the Namma Metro mobile app and can be used to tap at the QR-enabled Automatic Fare Collections (AFC) gates at metro stations. iOS users will need to wait until an official mobile app for the metro train is available.

Impact of Bangalore Metro on the Real Estate Market 

Many commuters have avoided traffic jams by using the Bangalore metro. It has also proved to be a success for real estate projects near the Namma metro. Property prices have risen by 20%. New residential projects increased by 30% after the construction of phase 1 Metro between 2017-2022.
According to the Centre of Environmental Planning and Technology study, the impact of the metro on residential and commercial properties is more significant than that on residential properties.

Bangalore Metro Art Centre

The Bangalore Metro Art Centre, also known as Rangoli, is a Metro Arts Centre in Bangalore Metro. It’s a public space that allows people without experience or exposure to the performing and visual arts worlds. It measures 500m in length and 30 meters wide. The Bangalore metro art centre-Rangoli address is Metro Station, Mahatma Gandhi Rd, Shivaji Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560001.

The Art Centre consists of the following:

The ICICI Bank introduced a credit card that combines the Bangalore Metro Smart Card. It is called Bangalore Metro Credit Card. These are some of the benefits of using this credit card.

  • Preloaded Amount – The Bangalore Metro Credit Card comes preloaded with Rs.100. This allows you to use the card immediately after you receive it.
  • Fast and easy: With a credit balance on your Namma Metro Card Chip, there is no need to wait in line to recharge your smart card before you can start your journey. The ICICI Bank also offers an auto-recharge facility that allows you to top up your card as soon as it reaches a predetermined low limit.
  • Discounted FaresBangalore Metro Credit Card provides a 15% discount on the total fare for a particular route. The same offer is also available with the Namma Metro Smart Card.
  • Flexibility. The Bangalore Metro Credit Card gives you the freedom to plan and flexibility. You can change your destination at any time and take a different route with this credit card. Depending on the station you exit from, the fare will be deducted.
