The White House is self-explanatory. It is the residence and daily business of the President of the United States. The White House is located in Washington, DC, and has housed every American president since 1800. The White House USA: History

Irish-born architect James Hoban designed the White House. It was built between 1792 and 1800 out of Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. During Thomas Jefferson’s reign, he added colonnades on each wing to conceal storage areas and stables. Unfortunately, the White House USA was destroyed by fire during the War of 1812. The interiors had been destroyed, and the exteriors had been charred. Porticos were added between 1824 and 1829, and reconstruction began almost immediately. The White House – Overview

The US President’s House is now a sprawling complex that includes the West Wing, East Wing, Executive Residence, Blair House, and Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The Executive Residence consists of six floors. The White House has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. It is part of the President’s Park and is owned by the National Park Service. The building was ranked second in America’s Favorite Architecture list by the American Institute of Architects in 2007.

The White House USA: Layout and Amenities 

The White House Complex is a collection of buildings that house the working and living quarters of the members of the Presidency. The Chief Usher is in charge of coordinating daily operations.

There are six stories in the White House.

It has over 55,000 square feet of floor space.

It has over 130 rooms and 5 bathrooms.

Facilities at the White House include: 

  • Multiple elevators
  • Fireplaces
  • Tennis courts
  • Bowling alley
  • Movie theatre
  • Jogging track
  •  Swimming pool and 
  • Golf area. 

It is said that multiple chefs were employed to cater to the residents and guests.

It was the first government building in Washington to be wheelchair accessible. Because of the installation of a ramp in the East Wing Corridor, it is now possible to use a wheelchair for special events and public tours.

White House Additions – During Different President Tenures

During the Nixon administration, First Lady Pat Nixon renovated the Green Room, Blue Room, and Red Room, placing over 600 artefacts in the White House. This is the largest acquisition in the history of any administration. President Richard Nixon oversaw the construction of the Press Briefing Room (over Roosevelt’s old swimming pool) and a single-lane bowling alley in the US President’s House basement.

Computers and the first laser printer entered the White House during the Carter administration. During the Reagan administration, computer usage increased. During this time, the private family quarters were wholly redesigned and redecorated. During the Reagan administration, public areas were also extensively maintained. In 1988, the White House was accredited as a museum. 

During George W. Bush’s presidency in 2003, the team reinstalled the solar thermal heaters used to heat water for maintenance personnel and the spa and pool. Mr Obama installed solar panels on the White House roof in 2013. It was the first solar power used in the president’s living quarters.

White House USA  –  Executive Residence

The president and his family reside at the Executive Residence. This is also where ceremonies and entertainment take place. The Blue Room, Green Room, Red Room, Family Dining Room, State Dining Room, Hall, Cross Hall, and Grand Staircase are all located on the State floor of the residential building. Other rooms on the ground floor include the Map Room, China Room, and so on. The White House master Bedroom, the Yellow Oval Room, the President’s Dining Room, a small kitchen, and a private dressing room, among other things, are located on the second floor. The Solarium, Game Room, Linen Room, and other amenities are on the third floor.

White House USA – West Wing

The president’s office (the Oval Office) is in the West Wing. It also houses his senior staff’s offices. There is room for approximately 50 employees. It houses the Cabinet Room, which is used for official meetings and gatherings. The Roosevelt Room, White House Situation Room, and James S. Brady Press Briefing Room are also located here. The West Wing was renovated in 2007 to include fibre optic cables and LCD screens in the press briefing room. Another renovation occurred in 2010 to create an underground structure. A few presidential staff members are also housed in the nearby Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

White House USA – East Wing

The East Wing has more office space. Initially, this was used for the first lady’s office and staff. The East Wing was constructed originally during World War II. The main goal was to conceal the construction of an underground bunker that would be used in an emergency. The Presidential Emergency Operations Center is the name of the bunker.

The US President’s House and its grounds cover approximately 18 acres. Before the construction of the North Portico, most public events were entered through the South Lawn. The general layout of today’s White House is based on Frederick Law Olmsted’s 1935 design, which President Roosevelt commissioned. Richert Mellon redesigned the White House Rose Garden during the Kennedys’ reign. The Rose Garden is located on the West Colonnade’s perimeter. Jacqueline Kennedy started the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, but it wasn’t finished until after her husband was assassinated. This garden is located on the East Colonnade’s border. Michelle Obama initiated establishing the first organic garden at the White House. She also installed beehives on the South Lawn, which provided organic honey to the First Family and their guests. Melania Trump redesigned the Rose Garden in 2020.

White House USA: Public Tours

The White House allows small groups of people to tour its grounds. These tours were previously halted following the 9/11 attacks. These tours were resumed on a limited basis and only to specific personnel in September 2003. Following that, the White House remained closed to the public. White House USA – Security

The US Park Police and the US Secret Service guard the US President’s House Complex. Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) units patrolled Washington, DC airspace in 2005. Since then, these units have been used to protect the entire airspace surrounding the White House. It is worth noting that the White House does not permit aircraft landing.
