Kay Stanley and Curt Seymour referenced records on this newly constructed Daufuskie Island residence that has endured centuries of salty air and sandy ft.

1. Start with a Smart Plan

Kay and Curt built history into their domestic with a plan that looks like it’s been introduced through the years. Throughout the interior, the couple chose inconsistent window styles and varying board widths (on floors and walls) to create a haphazard effect, furthering the idea that the plan still needed to be completed. Enclosed porches represent renovations the shape would have persisted over time. “When someone enters our domestic and says, ‘This residence is in first-rate shape for its age,’ we’ll recognize we hit the mark,” says Kay.

A seventy-eight-inch-length porch swing stands as a settee on the back screened porch, Kay’s favourite spot to loosen up and lay out new fabric.

2. Maximize the Impact of Wood

“There is not one unmarried sheet of drywall within the complete residence,” says Kay. “Every wall and ceiling is wooden plank.” To achieve a nostalgic experience, Kay and Curt held off at the gypsum wallboard and opted for natural wood, leaving the beams uncovered whenever possible. “Wood brings warm temperature and character that simply can not be matched by way of some other cloth,” says Kay. Whether it is a board-and-batten, beaded board, or unmarried planks, timber guarantees immediate effect, even if the budget simplest permits placing it on an available wall or ceiling.

4. Opt for Muted Hues

Thinned paint coats walls, ceilings, and cabinetry to create a patina of weathered wood. A darkish-stained window repeats the floor’s heat hue just above the kitchen’s apron-front sink. “We took an image of the authentic windows at our family cabin in Minnesota and copied the appearance,” says Kay.

5. Choose Authentic Lighting

The house’s lighting maintains a genuine duration appearance composed of electrified gas lanterns, rewired and repurposed antiques, and antique reproductions. Kay and Carolyn, known as upon Adairsville, Georgia, lighting fixtures guru Eloise Pickard to create custom lighting at some point of a whole lot of the house. “Each of Eloise’s furniture is, in reality, a spotlight,” says Kay. Kay selected handcrafted reproduction fixtures to complement the look, each seeming as genuine as their authentic counterparts.

An indoor casement window connects the breakfast corner to the adjacent kitchen. Built-in seating and a custom light fixture crafted from an old lampshade evoke cottage attraction.

6. Keep it Casual

“As with the house’s outside, I wanted the indoors to seem as if it has been gathered and pulled collectively over time,” says Kay. The couple added antiques east of Kansas City and combined them with painted portions, flea marketplace unearths, and vintage reproductions for an informal beach appearance. “Carolyn got what I changed into seeking to do with the old, beat-up type of thing,” says Kay. “We scoured Savannah antique shops for one-of-a-type unearths and piecemealed the rooms together.”

7. Don’t Overlook Details

“We tried to re-create exactly how the residence could have been constructed in every manner,” says Kay. “I wanted the entirety as antique as feasible.” Glass doorknobs upload appeal to the baths. Most mild furnishings within the residence operate with a push button and a few characteristics with an old-fashioned pull-down chain. Kay concealed a Sub-Zero refrigerator in the kitchen with an intricately crafted stained okay panel complete with antique icebox hardware. “It’s the coolest element in the residence,” she says.

The kitchen ceiling soars to 20 ft, allowing the lofty bank of clerestory home windows to radiate daylight.
