Types of Steel for Construction, Steel Prices & More

Posted on October 6, 2023October 7, 2023 By Nupur Chawale No Comments on Types of Steel for Construction, Steel Prices & More

It’s crucial to understand the sort of steel that will be used in the construction of your home if you’re doing it yourself. We provide information about the various types and grades of Indian steel in this blog and the cost of steel for building. This blog is about Types of Steel for Construction, Steel Prices & More.

Steel is one raw material you should purchase carefully for quality if you intend to build a house. The lifespan of your property will also depend on the quality of the steel rods and bars you use. Steel is frequently used in Asian countries for building, with concrete and bricks used for the foundation.

Steel is preferred because of its unmatched strength, flexibility, and moldability. By 2028, the Indian real estate market is anticipated to increase at a CAGR of 9%. Buildings for independent homes, businesses, apartments, and public areas would all be constructed more quickly, requiring the best steel.

This suggests that the cost of steel for construction will likewise rise in the upcoming years. You’ll become a savvy customer if you know the steel for your house construction demands and market prices.

Major Types of Indian Steel for Construction

The following are some of the primary types of steel for construction in India.

1. Stainless Steel

One of the most popular steel forms for building and producing everyday items is stainless steel. It has more oxidation and corrosion resistance than standard steel. This is the rationale behind the widespread use of this metal in kitchenware.

In stainless steel, 11% chromium is added to the usual iron and carbon composition. Stainless steel can be used in outdoor construction settings where the steel structure will be exposed to the elements.

Even though stainless steel is more expensive than its ordinary counterpart, it is a fantastic structural choice for more significant buildings.

Price of Stainless Steel: Over the next five years, stainless steel demand is likely to surge along with the real estate market’s expansion. Steel will cost more money as well. The cost of steel for the building currently falls within the following range:

TMT stainless steel rods: INR 50 – INR 70/kg

Stainless steel rods: INR 150 – INR 180/kg

2. Galvanised Steel

Galvanization is the process of coating steel with zinc to make it resistant to corrosion and rust. Because the zinc coating is more expensive, this type of steel is more costly than its standard cousin.

After being cleaned, steel is degreased, dipped in a sulphuric acid solution, covered in melted zinc, and allowed to dry and solidify.

One of the best steels for building is produced via galvanization. It is frequently used to create tubes, tap structures, rails, and outdoor fencing. Galvanization also gives the steel a lovely luster, making it a popular interior design material.

Galvanized Steel Cost: The cost of this steel for building is estimated to range from INR 50 to INR 90 per kilogram—the quantity of zinc used for coating and the manner of manufacture account for the price variation.

3. Carbon Steel

The least expensive type of steel on the market is carbon steel, often known as mild steel or black bar. Only carbon and iron are present; nothing else is. The production procedure is straightforward and reasonably priced. However, this variety lacks oxidation resistance; rust is less durable than other possibilities, such as galvanized or stainless steel, and is not as tough as these substitutes.

Mild steel can be seen being used in concrete supports and building frames. It is preferred for inside construction because it is guarded against oxidation and water damage.

Price of Carbon Steel: Depending on the grade, the cost of carbon steel for construction starts at INR 20/kg.

4. High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel

HSLA steel is thought to be of a higher quality than standard carbon steel. It provides better corrosion protection and is marginally more potent than carbon steel, making it an excellent option for people seeking better, more cost-effective steel for construction.

Only 0.05% to 0.25% of the carbon in this steel is carbon. In addition to these alloys, HSLA steel is also made with trace amounts of manganese, nitrogen, copper, and nickel.

Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel Cost: The cost of HSLA steel for construction varies based on the grade and durability of the steel and ranges from INR 54/kg to INR 90/kg.

5. Rebar Steel

Rebar steel is a reinforcing steel used in buildings to reinforce concrete structures. Steel bars that have been rolled and flattened are the most frequent form. For installation, these bars might be shaped differently.

Rebar steel can be stretched into rods with the smallest possible diameters and lengths. As a result, these are employed in building sites as fencing, steel mesh, and other materials.

Rebar steel rods are a foundation to strengthen steel structures in commercial buildings such as skyscrapers, warehouses, and bridges.

Rebar Steel Price: The prices of rebar steel in India range between INR 42 per kg and INR 100 per kg.

6. TMT Steel

Steel that has undergone thermal mechanical treatment (TMT). TMT fortifies steel so that it is resistant to quakes and floods, protecting the building.

Buildings have a longer lifespan because thermally treated steel is highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. TMT bars and slabs are utilized as load-bearing building materials to support outside loads and to create intricate structures like skyscrapers, bridges, and dams.

TMT Steel Price: TMT steel for construction ranges around INR 50-80/kg.

Primary Grades of Indian Steel

Here are some of the main grades or categories of Indian steel available in the market. When it comes to steel, its grade is determined by the tangible, chemical, and mechanical properties of its composition.

What is Steel, and How is it Made

The strength of steel, an elementary alloy made of carbon and iron, is directly related to the quality of the iron used in its manufacturing. Iron is frequently more malleable and bendable than other metals. It is susceptible to heat and temperature changes, and given the appropriate circumstances, it could soften.

Iron is given a hardening agent when carbon is added, producing steel suitable for building. This steel adapts effectively to changes in temperature and pressure.

The weight of steel is primarily made up of pure iron, with only 2.14% carbon. Large enterprises manufacture steel. Iron ore is first melted in huge tanks to begin the process. Usually, there is more carbon in the dissolved iron than is desirable. Therefore, reducing the carbon content to roughly 2.14% of the total weight is the next step in producing high-quality construction steel.

Ingots and long slabs and rods are the two forms of steel that are manufactured. Steel is available in ingots, intermediate shapes that must be melted and cast into various formats. Only 4% of the current steel manufacturing facilities produce ingots. The remainder has slabs that are easily molded into multiple steel models.

Conclusion to Steel for Construction

Given the numerous options for grades and variation, purchasing steel for building projects may seem overwhelming. But before choosing the correct grade, it’s essential to understand how the steel will be used, how it will be exposed to the elements, and how it will be subjected to pressure and temperature changes.

Your construction manager should be able to suggest appropriate types to you. Additionally, do your study before deciding on a particular style.
