KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Ltd.) will complete the new line construction, which will begin at JLN Stadium to Infopark at Kakkanand in the next two years. The stakeholders’ meeting was held on October 12, 2022, to assess the progress of the line’s construction under Phase II. Kochi Metro Kochi Metro is a fast transportation system in God’s state, Kerala, that runs in the dazzling cities of Kochi. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is a particular purpose vehicle (SPV) to support the Kochi Metro Rail Project. Its founder Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the foundations of the Kochi Metro train project in 2012. Then Prime of India Narendra Modi opened the line between Aluva and Palarivattom open to the public on June 17, 2017. On September 1, 2022, PM Modi of India laid the foundations for the Phase II corridor.


It was the first transportation system to have all its administrative tasks carried out by women. Each Kochi Metro station is an individual theme inspired by Kerala’s tradition and geographical location.
Alstom Metropolis trains with three carriages are operated in the Kochi Metro. Each train measures 66.55 meters long and includes a capacity of 136 seats, which can hold 975 passengers. In Muttom Yard, KMRL added a fleet, bringing its total trains up to 25. Its subway trains can run at a maximum speed of 80 km/hour.

Kochi Metro Route Lines

Kochi Metro Rail services are in operation throughout the city. It is an elevated metro network since the entire network comprises above-ground connecting lines composed of different sections ( I, IA IB II, IA IB). Kochi Metro currently has two lines that are in operation:

  • Blue line: Aluva -Petta
  • Pink line: JLN Stadium – Infopark II

Let’s talk about both of the Kochi Metro lines in detail below.

Blue Line: Phase I of the Kochi Metro Route

Phase I of Kochi Metro comprises one line inaugurated on the 17th of June 2017. The line typically forms a semicircle. It first travels in the northeast-southwest direction, later turning towards the east. The current line measures 23.8 km long and has 22 stations in operation. The range of stations spans from the wildlife of the Western Ghats to the local dishes of Kochi. Each station on the line has distinct themes inspired by the rich heritage and culture of the city, which is lush and green in Kerala.

Blue Line: Phase IA of the Kochi Metro Route (Under Construction)

The Phase 1A section of the Kochi Metro stretches for 1.78 kilometers, connecting Petta to SN Junction. In Phase 1A, two stations, Vadakkekotta, SN Junction, and an avant-garde Panamkutty Bridge, are under construction.

Blue Line: Phase IB of the Kochi Metro Route (Under Construction)

The metro’s Phase 1B extension is expected to stretch 1.16 kilometers, starting from SN Junction to Tripunithura Terminal. The cost will be INR 162.98 million to build the Kochi Metro route.

Pink Line: Phase II  of Kochi Metro

The Kerala Government authorized the Kochi Metro Phase II project in July 2018. It includes a brand-new 11.2-km Pink Line and 11 stations. A phase component is the construction of a spur line that runs through Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Infopark II in Kakkanad.

Kochi Metro is a fast transport system located in Kochi, previously called Cochin. There is only one of the phases in operation, and it serves residents of Kochi and the surrounding areas. However, two more phases are planned. This Petta up to SN Junction section is part of The Kochi Metro and is slated to be completed in June 2022, and trials will begin in April 2022. Kochi Metro Fare

Kochi Metro offers a hassle-free, affordable option to travel around the stunning city. For each journey, you can purchase an admission ticket for one trip right away at the station. In addition, the tickets for groups are available when you travel with groups. Tickets for groups can be purchased at an agent at the gate.

  • The minimum price for the Blue Line is INR 10. Blue Line is INR 10.
  • The maximum price for Blue Line is INR 60. Blue Line is INR 60.
  • If you start your journey at Aluva Metro Station, you can get to Cochin University Metro Station for INR 30. JLN Stadium Metro Station for INR 40 and Petta Metro Station for INR 60.

Kochi Metro Mobile Ticketing System

Kochi Metro commuters can pay for their tickets on their phones by downloading the Kochi1 mobile app.
Step 1. Commuters can download the application via using the Google Play Store or the App Store.
Step 2: You’ll need to register an account in the app. After that, an mPIN will be generated.
Step 3: Select your station of boarding and your destination.
Step 4: You can choose the digital payment method when you select”boot tickets.
Step 5: After making payment, a QR code can be scanned at the metro station’s entry point.

Kochi Metro Timings

Kochi Metro saves a lot of time when traveling. In addition to being a cost-effective option, Kochi Metro also prevents the need to travel on busy roads, making it possible to go from one area within the city to the next in just a few minutes.

  • Kochi Metro is operational from 6 am until 10:30 pm Monday through Saturday. It is also open from 8 am to 10:30 pm on Sundays.
  • It takes 21 minutes to cover the distance between Aluva Metro Station and Petta Metro Station.
  • It takes seven minutes to complete Petta to Pathadipalam route. Pathadipalam Petta to Petta route, and it takes 16 minutes to complete that route. Aluva up to Cochin University way.

Metro Smart Parking

Kochi Metro uses technology to modernize the old parking system used in parking spaces, allowing the metro station’s parking facilities to function more effectively.

The objective is to employ technology to guarantee a safe, simple, accessible park at the metro station. In Kochi Metro parking lots, sophisticated sensors and cameras monitor the security level.

The stations, except Aluva, Edappally, MG Road, Kalamaserry, and Cusat, are scheduled to provide free parking. If security personnel is needed to manage the parking, a minimal fee is collected from Aluva, Edappally, MG Road, Kalamaserry, and Cusat stations’ parking areas.

The people who do not take Metro services like the Kochi Metro will be fined INR 30 for parking their vehicles in the parking area for two hours.

Kochi Metro Public Bicycle Facility

To assist commuters in getting to their stations faster, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) launched the Public Bike Sharing (PBS) system located at The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro Station in Kochi. The MYBYK app, part of the PBS system, permits users to sign up and use bicycles at their docking stations.
Commuters can also rent bikes from an adjacent docking station for the journey to their next station. They can then hire a bicycle from the metro station departing in the nearby regions.
The company has installed 300 cycles in 35 MYBYK Hubs across the city and plans to expand to 700 bicycles and more than 65 Hubs over the next few months. There are 21 metro stations located in The 35 hubs.

Kochi Metro Card – the Kochi1Card

Kochi Metro has launched Kochi1Card in partnership with Axis Bank, which can be used for various reasons, such as having immediate access directly to Kochi Metro and a discount of 33% off tickets you purchase for traveling within Kochi Metro.
In addition to the benefits of the metro, you can use Kochi1Card to travel, shop, or eat out. The all-in-one card can be used in any retail or online store in Kochi.

Other Facilities at Kochi Metro Stations

Solar power, an uninterruptible power source (UPS) system, CCTV cameras, a ticket machine operated to distribute tickets on paper, and savvy card travelers are all installed at metro stations.
It is equipped with an automatic fare collection system that uses a combination of smart cards, QR codes, or RFID-encoded tickets to take a fare. Each station has specific features for differently-abled passengers, such as engraved walkways and tactile tiles for the visually impaired, wheelchair-accessible toilets, and elevators with Braille and auditory signaling.
Kochi Metro also uses the Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system to improve communication and signaling. The automatic signaling design has an integrated alert and protection system. Fiber-optic cables, SCADA train radio, and public address (PA) systems are all integrated into the telecommunications infrastructure.
On February 20, 2020, KMRL introduced Pavan Doot, the first electric bus service that operates every 40 minutes, starting from Aluva Metro Station to Cochin International Airport.

Interesting Facts About Kochi Metro

These are lesser-known but fascinating facts regarding this metropolis—Kochi metro.

  • Kochi Metro Kochi Metro is India’s 8th metro rail line that is inter-city.
  • The Phase 1 cost for that Kochi metro is the amount of 6218.14 Crore spread over 25.16 kilometers.
  • KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited) oversees train operations. It also has the authority to carry out its Kochi Water Metro project.
  • Kochi Metro is the first metro project with a modern CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) signaling system.
  • The first phase of Kochi Metro was completed less than four years after its construction began. This is a record.

Kochi Metro Updates

Metro Terminals: Three Metro terminals that are water-based in Kochi’s three locales Kakkanad, Vyttila, and Eloor, were constructed through Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). The terminals are fully equipped and ready for utilization. At the end of June 2022, all additional terminals located in the city, such as Vypeen, Bolgatty, High Court, South Chittoor, and Cheranalloor, are scheduled to be finished.

Water Metro Service: The KMRL plans to begin the first service of water-based metro along the busy Vypeen Boulevard-High Court route. CSL gave a portion of the 23 vessels used to KMRL via Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Kochi Metro Phase II: The Union Cabinet Meeting, held on September 8, 2022, and presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the amount and length of Kochi Metro Rail Project Phase II. According to recent reports, the project will comprise 11 stations spanning a distance exceeding 11.2 kilometers. The total cost for Kochi Metro Rail Project is expected to be Kochi Metro Rail Project will be Rs.1,957 crore. The cabinet meeting that followed declared that the work of construction of this phase, which includes the broadening of Seaport Airport road, is going smoothly. Cabinet members have approved other railway development in several important cities in India.

Latest News on Kochi Metro

A stakeholder gathering to discuss the progress of the new line for the Kochi Metro was organized on 12 October 2022.

Hide Eden MP was the chairperson of the meeting. Others were KMRL MD Loknath Behera, Thrikkakkara MLA Uma Thomas, district collector Renu Raj Commissioner of Police C H Nagaraju, additional secretary of Kochi corporation V S Shibu, and the councilors from the wards which fall under the Phase II alignment.
At the meeting, KMRL representatives presented the alignment they had approved to the stakeholder group, and MD Loknath Behera invited suggestions from the people’s representatives. Hide Eden proposed that KMRL officials enhance roads along the alignment to ensure smooth and slow traffic.
Thrikkakkara MLA Uma Thomas asked KMRL to review the drainage plan for the catchment area for Phase II, with flash floods in monsoon at the forefront. The council members also pledged their complete support for the project. Furthermore, KMRL assured that it would consider all suggestions and hold regular meetings to keep track of the project’s progress. They also informed us that the geotechnical examination of the new line would be completed in October and by the end of the month.
The construction of the new line under the Phase II of the Kochi Metro is expected to start by January 2023, i.e., the year following.

Kochi Metro: Bottom Line

Complete with top-of-the-line infrastructure, Kochi Metro is resolving the problems associated with pollution in Kochi. Launching the new line in Phase II will improve the transportation system in Kochi and the lives of the people there.
