Diwali Puja Vidhi and Rituals
On the auspicious day of Diwali puja, people honour Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. The Puranas claim that after descending, Goddess Lakshmi visits every home on Earth. In order to appease the goddess and win her favour, the house must be well-cleaned and lit during this auspicious time. The following customs are to be considered when celebrating Diwali puja:
- Cleaning is very important for Diwali, especially if you do Diwali puja. You have to sprinkle Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges River) and clean your house completely. Additionally, candles, Rangoli, and clay lamps can be used to decorate the dwelling.
- In your living room or puja, place a crimson cotton cloth on a table or stool. Spread a handful of grains in the center of the platform.
- Position the bronze or silver kalash in the middle of the grains, filled with 75% water. To the kalash, add a penny, a supari (betel nut), a marigold flower, and some rice grains. On the kalash, arrange five mango leaves in a circle.
- Position the image of Goddess Lakshmi in the center and the statue of Lord Ganesha on the right side of the Kalash, facing southwest. Create a small, level mound of rice on a tiny thali, use Haldi to draw a lotus blossom, add some cash, and place it in front of the idol.
- Set up your accounting book and other financial and business-related items in front of the idol.
- Put on tilak, offer flowers, and light a diya in front of the god’s sculptures.
- Close your eyes and say the puja mantra while holding a flower in your palm as a form of prayer.
- You should say the Diwali puja mantra while joining your hands in prayer. Give the flower you are holding to Ganesha and Lakshmi after you have finished praying.
- Offer a panchamrita, or water bath, to a Lakshmi deity. Please put it back with the Kalash after giving it another water and towel wash.
- Present a garland, food, kumkum, and haldi to the deity. Dhoop and burn incense sticks in front of the idol.
- Present the deity with a coconut, supari, and paan leaf. Place a bouquet and some cash in front of the idol and offer the goddess fruits and sweets.
- Ring the puja bell, offer a Diya in a thali, and perform the Lakshmi aarti. You can now carry out Holi festivities by giving and receiving food, candies, and prasad.

How To Prepare Diwali Puja Samagri
Some of the Samagri above require the basic preparations listed below. Furthermore, some of the terminology that is defined below may not be familiar to all of you.
Akshat: Generally, white and crimson akshat are provided for the deity’s invocation. All that white akshat is white rice offered to Lord Shiva and Lord Satyanarayan. Offerings of crimson akshat are made to gods such as Lord Ganapati, Durga, Goddess Lakshmi, and others. To prepare them, combine rice with kumkum or vermilion.
Panchamrit: According to Hindu customs, Panchamrit is the nectar offered to the gods on special occasions. Panch signifies five, and Amrut means honey in Sanskrit. Five nectars, namely ghee, sugar, honey, milk, and yoghurt, are used to make panchamrit. Every component has a symbolic meaning. Ghee nourishes the body, milk is pure, sugar lends sweetness, yoghurt gives strength, and honey symbolizes oneness.
Grab a milk bowl.
Add ghee and sugar.
Include beaten curd.
Add honey.
Until the sugar dissolves, thoroughly mix.
Kalava: A cotton thread dyed red and yellow that is readily available in the market is all that Kalava is. Because it is regarded as auspicious, it is utilized in every puja. Every puja needs thread since it is used as a fabric offering to the god. It provides excellent protection against conditions such as heart-related illnesses, high blood pressure, diabetes, and paralysis when worn around the wrist.
Durva grass: If you have a yard with green grass, you can pick sensitive shoots of Durva grass at home. Fresh green grass with delicate green shoots is called durva grass. During puja rituals, durva is a substantial offering made to a select group of gods and goddesses. The dewdrops on the leaves of Durva’s frail shoots absorb the divine principles of the gods.
Janeu: Janeu is composed of many strands of thread and has a white colour. Every Hindu Brahman wears this holy thread as a means of enhancing cleanliness, bestowing longevity, and bestowing divine favours. It is a gift in every puja vidhi. The second thread symbolizes Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, while the three strands stand for the goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kali.

Significance of Diwali Puja
Goddess Lakshmi is a representation of prosperity and fortune. She is revered in Hinduism for her achievements, wealth, and moral qualities. Hindus hold that she eases people’s problems and, therefore, helps them progress on a spiritual path.
Goddess Lakshmi, a symbol of knowledge and prosperity, is worshipped alongside Lord Ganesh on Deepavali, also known as Diwali. It is said that Lord Ganesh destroys obstructions and negative energies. He is the god of learning and instruction, bestowing success and wisdom upon those who worship him.
The purpose of the Diwali puja is to appease Goddess Lakshmi. Wealth plays a major role in life advancement and upkeep, which is why, on the auspicious festival of Diwali, people do Lakshmi puja. Here, wealth does not equate to financial gain. It entails looking for a wealth of abilities, aptitudes, and information.
In addition, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi helps one achieve life’s ultimate purpose. The Goddess, AdiLakshmi, is another name for her, and she gives us power and serenity by connecting us to the sources.
The Diwali Puja should ideally be done during the Pradosh Kaal, which starts after dusk. The approximate duration of the Pradosh Kaal is two hours and twenty-four minutes. The period of Sthir Lagna in this Kaal is ideal for performing Lakshmi or Diwali pujas. Fixed or immovable is what sthir denotes. It means that if you perform the Diwali puja during Sthir Lagna, Goddess Lakshmi will reside in your home.
